Since the early 1900’s Highermead House has worn a variety of guises.
Captain Hart
Initially the building was constructed by Captain Hart, a military man. He started construction prior to the war, which held things up therefore construction was not completed until after the war.
Captain Hart lived alone in what would have a been a very grand bachelor pad, overlooking a very different Camelford Town.
The Headmasters Residence
With The Grammar School next door, Highermead House was a sensible place for the Headmaster to live.
In addition, the upper floor was used as dormitories for the students attending. The Grammar school serviced a geographically large area and often children lived too far away to cycle each way everyday.
Highermead Hotel
Several landlords and landlady’s operated the house as a Hotel, in the 90’s part of it was the local ‘night-club’ although, it probably wouldn’t be recognised as one by current standards.
Highermead Care Home
Most recently Highermead was a 21 bedroom care home for the elderly and was home to up to 22 residents at any one time.

Friendly, local businesses that we recommend and support.
Higher Culloden Farm, just at the top of our dead-end road.
The Masons Arms, Camelford. A great little family pub providing breakfast (at weekends), lunch, dinner and a friendly place to have a drink or two.
